Back scan
Electronic scanning of existing paper documents into a digital format.

Bar-code recognition
Feature of document management software that detects the barcode label on a document for quick indexing.

Batch scanning
Electronic scanning of multiple paper documents using predefined settings.

Black border removal
Feature of document management software that automatically removes the black edges of a document that has been digitally scanned. Black border edges can cause problems with optical character recognition (OCR) software.

Document archival and retrieval
Part of a document management system that interfaces with network storage devices and other computers so that documents can be digitally stored remotely and retrieved later on command.

Document scanning
Converting a paper document into an digital image using an electronic scanner.

Document management
Generically speaking, the management of paper or electronic documents through the lifecycle of the document.

Document preparation
The removal of staples and paper clips from documents prior to document scanning.

Duplex Scanning
The ability to automatically scan both sides of a document in a scanner.

Groupware
Software that supports document collaboration, such as the ability to view or edit a document at the same time by several people.

Image De-skew
Feature of document scanning software that automatically corrects for documents that are not aligned properly horizontally or vertically when inserted in the scanner.

Indexing
The cataloging of electronic documents for easy search and retrieval.

Document imaging
Technology that converts paper documents into an electronic format using scanners and optical character recognition (OCR) software.

Jukebox
A mass-storage device connected to a network that houses large amounts of data on multiple media, such as CDs or tapes, that are accessed via a robotic arm.

Metadata
Data used to describe or classify an electronic document. Metadata is not actually part of the document itself but is used to assist in document search and retrieval.

Noise removal
Feature of document management software that automatically removes black dots from a scanned document image. Such dots can interfere with optical character recognition (OCR) software.

OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
Document scanning software that converts a scanned document image into an editable document file format.

Origami
A document scripting language used with document management software systems.

Scan-to-PDF
Document management software that generates Adobe Acrobat PDF files automatically from electronicall-scanned documents.

Simplex scanning
The scanning of one side of a document only. The document must be manually turned over and inserted in the scanner to scan the other side.

TWAIN
A software standard that allows document scanners to be directly controlled via software.

White page detector
Feature of document management software for use of double-sided scanners that detects if a blank page exists and removes it from memory.

Workflow
In the context of document management, software that tracks the process of creating, editing, converting, reviewing, and distributing a document from one computer to another. It allos multiple people to work on a document in an efficient and accountable manner.
